The Physics of SB-129

Theories of Time Travel

In this episode, Squidward hides in a freezer and isn't found for 2,000 years. He then uses a time machine he finds and travels to the past at the time of cavemen. Then Squidward breaks the time machine and travels to what seems like the end of time, and then finds the time machine again and makes it back home to the time where he got frozen. (This means that Squidward was still in the freezer when he got back...)

Albert Einstein described multiple ways of traveling in time. The first and easiest is what Squidward experienced when he was frozen for 2,000 years. To him it would seem like he closed his eyes in one time and opened them much further in the future. The harder ways to travel in time are to either find a vehicle that can go relatively close to the speed of light or to use a wormhole.

In this episode it is not very likely that either of the harder ways to time travel were used, but it's most likely that it was a room built on a wormhole.

Einstein's theory of relativity can be used to show that it is less impossible for someone to travel to the future either through a wormhole or by traveling close to the speed of light.

Unfortunately it also says that it is, as far as we know, impossible to travel back in time because it requires going faster than the speed of light or before the wormhole was created.
